Smaller treatment areas like the upper lip can be treated in minutes, and multiple areas of the body can be treated in a single session. Each session will be approximately four to six weeks apart to maximize results. During this time, the treated hair follicles will become inactive and the hairs will fall out.  Best results are observed after 4-6 sessions. The number of sessions will differ depending on the hair color, hair type, body area and skin tone.

Laser hair removal works best when hair follicles are in their mature stage; however, at any given time your hair is in various stages of growth. The number of treatments typically vary between 6-8 sessions every 4-6 weeks. As treatment proceeds, the intervals become longer apart. There are longer intervals for body hair (6-8 weeks) than for facial hair (4-6 weeks) in the first 3 sessions. Legs may require even longer intervals. Lighter and deeper hair, as well as hormonally controlled areas, such as chin, are more resistant and may require more treatment sessions. All of these variables are evaluated at each appointment.

While it may sound too good to be true, there really is no lengthy recovery period required with laser hair removal. You can leave the office and immediately return to work, school or leisure time. The most discomfort you will feel can be compared to a minor sunburn that should go away within a few days. A cold compress can be used to help cool the treated areas. Some patients may experience redness and itching, but that too will fade within a matter of days.

We ask that you refrain from plucking or waxing for about six weeks prior to your appointment. The reason being that the laser targets pigment in the roots of the hair. If the roots are plucked or waxed out, there’s really nothing to absorb the laser. Also, avoid sun exposure for six weeks before your treatment. The sun’s rays affect the skin and may interfere with the laser’s effectiveness. It can also exacerbate any potential side effects.

It usually takes about two to three weeks to notice a difference in the hair growth after your first treatment. Many of our patients see a big difference after their first session with some reporting a 50% reduction in hair, but experience has taught us that they will see regrowth in the first few sessions, which gradually reduces and no growth after 6 sessions. Full reduction of hair growth typically occurs after a series of eight to twelve treatments. Since everyone is different, we’ll make sure to go over all details of what you can expect during your consultation. Optimal results are observed after six to eight sessions. By then, you should see an 80-90 percent reduction in hair growth. The follicles that remain are damaged and produce a finer hair than you had before laser treatment. You can expect to shave much less than you do now. Some of our patients shave once a week, some once a month; some don’t have to shave at all.   The number of sessions will vary depending on your hair color, hair type, body area, and skin tone. Although, we do recommend 8 treatments for optimal reduction. You will have to come in for touch ups following hair removal due to changes in hormones, and fluctuations in hair growth.
